Trouble with Excel Formulas? Try the Evaluate Formula Tool

You just wrote an Excel formula and it isn’t producing the result you expected? Have no fear – this article will introduce you to the ‘Evaluate Formula’ tool which you can use to discover why your formula isn’t working. The Evaluate Formula tool achieves this by showing you the steps Excel takes to calculate your formula. This is very useful when you need to find a problem with a formula, or to understand the calculation process.

Finding the wrong value

Let’s look how the ‘Evaluate formula’ tool can be used to trace a problem, by looking at the following sample:

You can see that something is amiss with the formula in cell C3. The formula adds 1+2+3 (cells A2, A3 and A4) and then divides the result by 3 (cell B3); this should evaluate to 2 (6 divided by 3). But we got 2.4. By opening the Evaluate Formula tool (from the Formula Auditing area of the Formula ribbon), we can work the calculation of this value step by step (click the Evaluate button in the Evaluate Formula dialog to advance):

First we’ll examine the mechanics of the display. The underlined part of the formula in each step is the part that will be evaluated in the next step. The italic part of the formula in each step is the part that was evaluated in the previous step.

In this case, the one-but-last step seems off: we expected B3 to contain 3, but it seems to contain 2.5. The problem is probably that the cell’s display is set to show zero decimal places:
And there you have it – we’ve found the problem. Changing the cell’s formatting to show decimal places will show that cell B3 contains 2.5.

Google Launches Cloud Connect Plugin For Microsoft Office

Some good news for Google Docs users who have always wanted an official office add-in which can be used to create, share and manage Google Docs documents from Microsoft Office.

Google has just released Google Cloud Connect – an add-in for Microsoft office which adds simultaneous collaboration, revision history, cloud sync, unique URLs and simple sharing to the Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications. This is quite similar to another office add-in called OffiSync, which we have reviewed earlier.

Setting Up Google Cloud Connect With Microsoft Office

Setting up Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office is fast and simple. Head over to the Cloud connect page and click the “Accept and Install” button to launch the web installer. Hold on for two minutes until the web installer downloads and install Google Cloud connect for Microsoft Office on your computer.

Once the add-in is in place, launch Microsoft Office and you will see a “cloud connect bar” as shown below:

To start using Google Cloud connect with Microsoft office, click “Login”, enter your Google account credentials and choose “Grant Access” in the following step.

When you’re through setting up Cloud connect with Microsoft office, you will notice two options for managing the office document you are creating – either manually sync the document by hitting the “sync” button or let Google cloud connect automatically sync the document, spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation to your Google Docs account.

I would prefer using the “Manual” way but you can use the “automatic” mode which syncs a refreshed copy on every save or when other users update values on the same document from their Google Docs account.

Note: You will have to save a local copy of the document to your computer first, which will then be synced to your Google Docs account.

One of the downsides is that there is no way to open a Google Docs document directly in the Microsoft Office interface. I have a dozen or more spreadsheets stored in my Google Docs account and if I need to edit a spreadsheet, I have to download it from the normal web UI and then use Google Cloud connect to sync changes (if any).

There is no way to open the spreadsheet directly in Microsoft Excel, do some quick changes and sync the changes back to my Google Docs account.

Supported File Types

Google Cloud Connect works with most versions of Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, and 2010. It’s not compatible with the Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Edition or any versions installed with Microsoft’s Click-to-Run delivery mechanism. The following file types are supported in Google Cloud connect:

Word file types: .DOC, .DOCX, .DOTX, .DOCM

Excel file types: .XLS, .XLT, .XLSX, .XLSM.

PowerPoint file types: .PPT, .POT, .PPS, .PPTX, .POTX, .PPSX, .PPTM, .POTM.

Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office works on Windows XP (requires .NET 2.0), Windows Vista and Windows 7, both 32 bit and 64 bit systems are supported. Unfortunately, Google Cloud connect is not available for MAC’s yet.

Google Launches Recipe Search Engine

Google has added a new section to their search engine dedicated to finding recipes. It can be found by expanding the left sidebar on Google search results page by clicking on the “More” button. The Recipe View lets you narrow your search results to show only recipes, and helps you choose the right recipe amongst the search results by showing clearly marked ratings, ingredients and pictures.

Searching for a recipe shows constituting ingredients which lets you further narrow down your search by selecting available ingredients. You can also filter recipes by cooking time – less than 15 min, less than 30 min etc. and calorie count for the health conscious. And if Google fails to bring you the recipe you are looking for, you still got a whole lot of dedicated recipe search engines to try out.

Although this might seem like a relatively small niche area to be diving into, but Google claims that it receives about 10 million recipe searches a day, or about one percent of Google's entire daily search volume. Apparently, this is enough to give the topic some attention and development.

Webmasters who own recipe based websites can add the rich snippets markup to their pages, so that their content can appear with this improved presentation in regular Google results as well as in Recipe View.

When you download from warez sites, all the keygens and patches and even the original trial programs are trojaned. This means you will get the software for free. But your computer will be affected with a trojan horse. When you run the patch/keygen, you’ll get the desired output, but in background, your system gets infected with the trojan. Turkojan is a famous Trojan horse. A trojan is much more superior to keyloggers and RATs. It provides much more functions, so that a Hacker has more access to your PC.

How to protect yourself from hacking:

• Install a good licensed anti-virus. I suggest you go for Kaspersky. It’s the best anti-virus out there.
• Always have your Windows Firewall turned on.
• Never ever trust warez sites. There is a lot of malware flowing out there.
• Don’t run .exe programs given by anyone. Trust only yourself.
• Never auto-play a pen drive. By this, malware automatically gets installed on your PC.
• Don’t run attachments from emails.
• If you want to run .exe files safely, run them sandboxed. A free application Sandboxie is available for this purpose.
• If you feel you’re infected, format your PC immediately. No anti-virus can remove a Trojan horse from your PC. It’s very difficult to remove a trojan from an infected PC.
