So You Got a Laptop This Holiday Season: Now What?

Lucky You. Someone was generous enough to give you a shiny new laptop, maybe even that swanky HP Envy 14 we were raving about a few weeks ago. So now what?
We’re here to help you welcome that new machine into your home in grand style. So go ahead, here’s the top gear and software you’ll need to make that lappie feel right at home.

Ninite App Installer

laptop

There are loads of small apps you have to install when you get a new PC, including your favorite browser, chat software, and various utilities. With Ninite, you can install them all in one click and save yourself hours of tedium.
Go to the Ninite website, choose your favorites by clicking checkboxes, and then download your own customized installer that places all those software picks on your new machine.
What to choose from this cornucopia of freebies? Might we suggest DropboxDropbox, the easiest file synchronizer in the world? In addition to that, all the usual suspects are there, including Adobe Flash, Chrome,FirefoxSkype, Security Essentials and even iTunes. Out of 81 choices, there’s bound to be a few in there you’ll need. One click and you’re done.
By the way, Ninite’s install routine doesn’t surreptitiously add any of those pesky toolbars or any other junkware. Try it out — you’ll love it.

Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Windows 7

HP Envy 14

Transfer all your precious pics, flicks, tunes and docs from your old computer to the new one with this $20 USB cable. This unusually high-priced length of wire also lets you transfer your applications from one PC to another (sorry, it’s not for Macs).
If you’re not a fan of fiddling with software peculiarities, you’ll be happy to learn that there’s no clunky driver installation required when you’re using the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable, according to Belkin. Aimed at novice users, the cable is ideal if you don’t have a fast network to transfer multiple gigabytes of data.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

HP Envy 14

If you followed our buying advice and picked up that sweet HP Envy 14 laptop, you’ve got enough horsepower to leap into the gaming maelstrom. Indeed, you’ve now got a 1GB Radeon HD 5650 video card inside with enough juice to run the hottest game on the planet, Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Go for it, soldier. Although that 14.5-inch screen is outstanding, cranking out sharp-looking video and wide viewing angles, do the game justice and get yourself an external monitor for a bigger view and extra immersion. Don’t go for resolution over 1920×1200, though — we tried running the Envy through a 2560×1600 display and it couldn’t handle that, instead stepping down to a lower rez.
Finally, the Envy rocks the Beats Audio, and the Call of Duty: Black Ops soundtrack will do it justice, with big-time Hollywood actors Ed Harris and Gary Oldman manning the big guns. Lock and load!

Counter Strike: Source Gets a Facelift

Yes, a “pro” action gamer will always have his (and in the remote chance that there is one) or her Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 but the giant that is Counter Strike never really had a Counter Strike 2 did it? It received a facelift once with Counter Strike: Source – bringing in most of the Havoc physics of the Source engine from Half Life 2. Yet, even with its teeming populace of obsessed gamers, it never felt like playing a next-gen action game.
image
Now, with 144 achievements, lifetime player stats, a cinematic death camera (which I have yet to see) and a domination-revenge system and much, much more, playing Counter Strike: Source with the updated Source Engine 2009 feels every bit like playing a next-gen FPS. Playing it through, however, is just the same. Nevertheless there was some difficulty getting games as the Indian servers I used to play in were not responding – or their machines had not been updated to the new CS:S.
Yes, there are inane achievements, yes the scoreboard looks weird and yes there will not be a custom name for your player within the game (your player name will be the same as your Steam community name). With Steam pushing in a 66% discount for buyers as well as introducing Steam Play (i.e. the game can be played on the same servers from a Mac) the game looks set to be bigger than ever.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to hunt for some newbs who have been baited by the 66% discount.

NVIDIA App Brings 3D Gaming to Your TV

Are you excited to start gaming in 3D? NVIDIA wants to show you how awesome 3D video games and movies can be, and it has teamed up with Panasonic for a US-wide road tour to showcase the latest in 3D home theater technology. As part of the tour, you'll be able to test out PCs running NVIDIA's 3DTV Play software with Panasonic's 3D HDTVs and shutter glasses (what a mouthful!).
3DTV Play lets you play 3D games or watch 3D video from your PC, and it works with compatible GeForce GPUs, over 400 games out of the box, and supports 3D TVs with HDMI 1.4, with resolutions up to 1080p at 24 frames per second. 3DTV Play isn't just for gaming; it lets you watch 3D movies, view 3D images, and even browse 3D Web sites. There's no release date yet for the app, but NVIDIA says it'll be "available later this spring" for $39.99. However, if you're an NVIDIA 3D Vision owner, the software's free.
While current PCs with NVIDIA GeForce cards will support 3DTV Play, 3D gaming requires twice the frameratw of 2D gaming, so newer, faster machines will provide the best experience for 3D. An NVIDIA rep told Gizmodo that the demo rigs used for some press previews were "inside a 3.5-foot-tall tower with a plexiglass side to show off the water cooling inside," which I can only guess will not be cheap.
Want to catch the NVIDIA/Panasonic tour? They'll be in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago through March 17, and at a dozen other cities after that. Specific locations and dates are available at Touch the Future. Did you get a chance to try World of Warcraft in 3D on the tour?

God of War 3 Game Director Wanted to Leave Out Sex Mini-game

Stig Asmussen ponders Kratos' sex life in an interview from a recent God of War 3 press event.

LOS ANGELES -- Would a God of War game be a God of War game without a sex mini-game?

The venerated franchise in the action game genre is known for several of its gameplay staples, including its controversial sex mini-games. So far every God of War title (even the PSP version) has included an optional, hidden section of the main game where protagonist Kratos engages in a sexually suggestive scene allowing players to press buttons in order for the Greek beefcake to please a handful of topless maidens.

But at first, God of War 3 game director Stig Asmussen didn't want to include it this time around.

"It was more a debate between me and several of the story writers," said Asmussen to UGO during a God of War 3 press event in Los Angeles last week. "I was like, 'I'd rather not have it in there at all.'"

When I asked him what the purpose of the sex mini-game was, he said, "You asked a very fine question, and I felt sort of the same way. What is the point? If we do it, it has to have a point."

Asmussen maintained that in the previous titles, the mini-game did have a function. In God of War, it was to there to show that Kratos was a "man's man," the game director said. "It was like this guy, he gets what he wants, and you learn that right at the beginning of the game. It was a really important tool in establishing that."

As for God of War 2, gamers liked it so much that the developers decided to do it again. But for the third one, Asmussen said, "It became one of these things where we’re damned if we do, and we're damned if we don't."

After giving it some thought, Asmussen eventually decided that the sex mini-game could be fun if done right. "We make it more than it's been in the past, but we also give it more of a purpose," he said. "It's not just you going in there, finding some corner and having sex with somebody. It's something that guides you through the story. You get information and more than just a fluff moment."

He also said that women on the development team helped craft the story behind the sex mini-game, and he wasn't worried about alienating any female gamers who might take offense.

"Women like sex too... I don't know, it's not like we're doing a porno or something," he said.

"I definitely think about the female audience when I think about violence against females, though," he added. "We always try to do (the sex) in a way where the woman had a choice, and we wouldn't want to do something like a rape scene or anything like that. I get what you're saying, but violence against women is something we definitely avoided."

The game director wouldn't spoil the sex mini-game for me, but definitely expect Kratos to get it on with "a goddess and a couple other people."

God of War 3 will be released on March 16th for the PlayStation 3. (And check out more interviews from the God of War 3 event, including Asmussen talking about his role as the game director, the future of the franchise and what's going on with the God of War movie.)
