4 Free Heatmap tools for tracking user behaviour on a site

Tracking user behaviour on a site can be quite tricky, I agree. You get lot of questions instead of answers starting from what metrics to track and what tools to employ to how long to track a metric. Having said that, I should admit that heatmaps are fun to look at and a more easy way to make meaning of your analytics metrics. Here are ten such heatmap tools that will make analytics easy for you.

1. Codynamix Open Source Free Heatmap Tool

Cannoli is an open source click heatmap tool and it’s written in Ruby on Rails. It’s based on Ruwa web analytics. You can get the latest code from github: http://github.com/rosario/cannoli
Its free however you have to request for an activation and email them with the site info you’re going to use it on.

2.  Attention Wizard Heatmap tracking tool

AttentionWizard uses advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to simulate human visual processing and attention. It instantly creates an "attention heatmap" of your Web page thatpredicts where someone would look during the first few seconds of their visit. This tool is more of a visual tracking tool than actual click tracking, so if you had a mock up design, just send it to this tool and it will predict you how a pair of human eyes will move along the design elements.

3. Click Density – A Free Heatmap + Analytics Suite

Click Density is more than a heatmap tool, its more of analytics and advanced tracking. They have both paid and free versions as well.

4. Click Heats – Free Heatmap  Software for websites

ClickHeat is a visual heatmap of clicks on a HTML page, showing hot and cold click zones. ClickHeat is an OpenSource software, released under GPL licence, and free of charge.

Bonus Tools – Paid Heatmap, Visitor Tracking & Analytics Software

1. Click Tale – See how much attention a specific website area gets from your visitors. Find what content your visitors care about the most, what they read, and what they completely skip over.

2. Crazy Egg – Another paid heatmap software that comes at low prices.

How To Enable Direct Downloads For RapidShare Premium

RapidShare, one of the largest online file sharing service has recently made several changes, one of the most annoying one though was that they have now disable direct file downloads for RapidShare Premium accounts.
Rapidshare Logo
This means that, even if you are a Rapidshare premium account user, you will have to click at-least 3 buttons/links  before your actual download begins. If you are one of the users who is angry about this, here is a way in which you can enable direct downloads for Rapidshare premium accounts.
Step 1: Login to Rapidshare Premium
Step 2: Click the "+" symbol next to "Settings" on the landing page after your login.
Enable Rapidshare Direct Downloads
Step 3: Click on the checkbox next to "Direct downloads, requested files are saved without redirection via RapidShare"
Step 4: Save the settings. You should now be able to directly download files without having to go through multiple clicks. Enjoy.

Over 1.3 Million Websites Host Malware - Don't Be One of Them

As a follow-up to our article "What You Need to Know About Malvertising:" Dasient saw a spike in the number of websites hosting malware in Q2 of this year, according to the security-as-a-service company's Q2 Malware Report. According to Dasient, over 1.3 million web sites host malware - more than twice as many as the company found in Q2. Also, malvertising campaigns tend to start on weekends, javascript based attacks are on the rise and ASP pages are increasingly targeted.
dasient infected sites
Dasient is quick to point out that in the case of attacks on ASP pages, correlation doesn't imply causation. But it does recommend increased attention to ASP based pages when configuring security systems such as Dasient's service and/or web application firewalls such as Breach WebDefend, Citrix Netscaler, and Imperva SecureSphere.
JavaScript injections grew by 19% while iFRAME injections decreased by 11%. Dasient credits the change with to the amount of access JavaScript can give hackers to a victim's browser: DOM elements, page referrer information and cookies.
Dasient notes that malvertising campaigns have a tendency to start on weekends when IT staff are less likely to respond quickly to an outbreak.
Dasient reiterates the "big three" ways sites get hacked, as reported here previously:
Third-party Widgets - 75% of websites use external JavaScript widgets. Third-party Advertising - 42% of websites display external advertisements.
Third-party Applications - 91% of websites have some outdated web applications.

How to Make Invisible Password Protected Folder ?

Do you want to password protect your folder? Do you want to make it invisible so that it remains unnoticed by the normal users? Well here is a way to do that. In this post I will show you how to make a password protected folder in Windows without using any additional software. Here is is step by step procedure to create a password protected folder.

How to create a Password Protected Folder
Step-1: Create a new folder (Right-click -> New -> Folder) and give it any name of your choice. For instance I name it as ABC.
Step-2: Now in this folder place all the important files, documents or any folders that you want to password protect.
Step-3: Now Right-click on this folder (ABC) and select the option Send To ->Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Step-4: Now a new compressed zipped folder gets created next this folder (ABC) with the same name.
Step-5: Double-click on this compressed zipped folder and you should see your original folder (ABC) here.
Step-6: Now goto the File menu and select the option Add a password.
ie: File -> Add a password
Now a small window will pop up and here you can set your desired password. Once the password is set, the folder will ask for the password every time it is opened. Thus you have now created the password protected folder.
How to make it Invisible
Step-1: Now Right-click on this password protected folder and select Properties.
Step-2: At the bottom select the option Hidden and press OK. Now your folder gets invisible (hidden).
Step-3: In order to unhide this folder go to My Computer – >Tools -> Folder options. Switch to View tab, scroll down and under Hidden files and folders you’ll see the following two options
§  Do not show hidden files and folders
§  Show hidden files and folders
Now select the second option and press OK. Now the invisible folder becomes visible in it’s location. To access it you need the password. To make it invisible again repeat step -1 through step-3 and select the first option and click OK. Now the folder becomes invisible once again.
I hope you like this post. Pass your comments!! Cheers

IBM Claims Breakthrough in Computing that can make Things 100 times Faster

No matter how much of computing power we pack into our hardware, one fact still remains. They are powered by age-old connections, the ones that had powered US Telegraph lines around a hundred and fifty years ago. Yes, I am talking about those copper wires. A nuisance as they should have become by now, IBM has finally realized the fact and come up with a better solution using an optical bus.
ibm-logo
IBM has made this breakthrough by using photons to transfer the signals, which has been done by electrons all this while. This will record a new era of computing, which will be accompanied by massive parallelism. This simply means better implementations of Artificial Intelligence but it is not limited to that. We can reopen areas where development has been strictly theoretical or stagnant because of the lack of the necessary computing power.
What is interesting is that although Big Blue has claimed this breakthrough, the idea was also developed at Sun Microsystems, which was further funded by the DARPA. However, IBM had the advantage of stability and self-sufficiency. Therefore, it has been developing the technology on its own. In the meanwhile, Sun went down the Oracle drain and now, we have IBM taking away all the credit.

GoDaddy.com On Sale.. Not At $.99 Though

GoDaddy is probably the king of domain registrations and hosting solutions with it being the registrant of a significant percentage of registered domains. Now the big daddy of domain registration, e-commerce and hosting services has put itself up on sale for a staggering $1 billion.
GoDaddy
According to WSJ, GoDaddy is up on the block for a cool sum of $1 billion. GoDaddy, which heavily advertises raunchy advertisements, specially during the Super Bowl posted revenue between $750 and $800 million in 2009 and is by far the biggest domain registrant and service provider for websites.
GoDaddy.com currently handles about 43 million domain registrations, the sale for Go Daddy Group Inc will be handled by Qatalyst Partners. GoDaddy has been known to provide steep discounts on domain registration including 99 cent domain deals to lure customers towards them. However, it would be interesting to see who they lure with the $1 billion price tag.

Twitter Instant Follows YouTube Instant and Google Instant

It looks like we have to start bracing ourselves to hear the word "Instant" overdone in the next few weeks and months. After  was launched a Stanford student created YouTube Instant and almost landed a job with .
twitter_instant
Now, behold, someone has gone ahead and created a  Instant search (http://beached.org/twinstant/) which works on the same fundamentals, results change as you type. However, it still has a lot work to do as far as the "guessing before you type" feature which both YouTube Instant and Google Instant have.
The author of Twitter Instant is riding the Instant wave and asks whether he should now ask for a job at Twitter. Twitter Instant aside, the fact that social media was leveraged and used to do something and then get a job offer in return will now see many such kickoffs where people do something interesting with a company’s product and then pitch it to them through social media in hope of a job or maybe just for fun.
Social media has definitely come a long way since it’s inception where people just wanted to keep in touch in friends. These days it has been used and sometimes overused for a variety of things including getting jobs, proposing to your girl/boy friend, pitching a product and more.
So are you going to follow the "Instant" wave and created something to please a company in hopes of landing a job? Considering the job market, this looks like the fastest way to land one, right?
